NSA Program Secretly Ruled Unconstitutional In 2011

The National Security Agency illegally gathered as many as 56,000 emails and other electronic communications between Americans with no connection to terrorism as part of a collection program that was ruled unconstitutional by a secret spy court in 2011.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court rendered its decision in an 86-page opinion on Oct. 3, 2011. It was declassified Wednesday by U.S. intelligence officials, and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper authorized the release of the opinion.

"This is not an egregious overreaching by a greedy agency seeking to spy on Americans," a senior intelligence official said. "This is a technological problem that resulted in an inadvertent collection of a relatively small number of U.S. personal communications."

Private Sector Involvement In Offshore Wind Project Discussed

BERLIN — The Ocean City area could play a big role in the development of offshore wind energy in the United States, according to the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA).
MEA officials were on the Eastern Shore last Friday to meet with business owners, government officials and other interested parties who may want to become involved with the offshore wind industry years before the first turbines even go up.

“There isn’t a single offshore wind turbine in place in the United States, but it’s not a new industry in Europe and other places in the world,” said MEA representative Ross Tyler.

DHS Employee Who Buys Department Guns Runs Racist, Homophobic Website

Ayo Kimathi, a Department of Homeland Security tasked with buying guns and ammo for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, runs a racist, homophobic website called “War is on the Horizon.” He calls himself the “Irritated Genie.” The site required approval from DHS, but Kimathi did not. His former supervisor told the Southern Poverty Law Center that she was “stunned” by the site. “To see the hate, to know that he is a federal employee, it bothered me,” she said. DHS signed off on the site based on Kimathi’s description, but apparently did not bother to check the site.

U.S. preps for possible cruise missile attack on Syrian gov't forces

(CBS News) WASHINGTON - CBS News has learned that the Pentagon is making the initial preparations for a cruise missile attack on Syrian government forces. We say "initial preparations" because such an attack won't happen until the president gives the green light. And it was clear during an interview on CNN Friday that he is not there yet.

"If the U.S. goes in and attacks another country, without a U.N. mandate and without clear evidence that can be presented," the president told CNN, "then there are questions in terms of whether international law supports it -- 'do we have the coalition to make it work?' Those are considerations that we have to take into account."

Unemployment Aid Applications Rise to 336,000

WASHINGTON — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose last week after reaching the lowest level in 5 ½ years. But the broader trend suggests companies are laying off fewer workers and could step up hiring in the months ahead.

The Labor Department said Thursday that applications for first-time benefits rose 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 336,000 in the week ending Aug. 17. That’s up from 323,000 in the previous week, which was the lowest since Jan. 2008.

The four-week average, which smooths week to week fluctuations, fell by 2,250 to 330,500. That’s the sixth straight decline and the lowest for the average since November 2007.

Daniel Ellsberg: US On Verge Of Becoming Police State Under Obama

Daniel Ellsberg, the man who leaked the Pentagon Papers in 1971, says the United States is on the verge of becoming a police state as evidenced by the National Security Agency's data collection programs and the treatment of secret document leakers Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning.

"We have not only the capability of a police state, but certain beginnings of it right now," Ellsberg told The Huffington Post Wednesday. "And I absolutely agree with Edward Snowden. It's worth a person's life, prospect of assassination, or life in prison or life in exile — it's worth that to try to restore our liberties and make this a democratic country."

Wal-Mart Spreads Made-In-U.S. Message

ORLANDO, Fla. — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is hoping for a groundswell “made-in-America” movement.

The world’s largest retailer hosted its first two-day summit Thursday bringing together retailers, suppliers and government officials that it hopes will build on the company’s recent commitment to drive more manufacturing in the U.S.

The event, which attracted representatives from 500 manufacturers, eight governors, U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker and officials from three dozen states, comes seven months after the Bentonville, Ark.-based discounter pledged that it planned to buy $50 billion more U. S.-made goods over the next decade. That’s the equivalent of just more than 10 percent of what Wal-Mart will sell at retail this year.

KIRSTEN POWERS: MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD WAGING BRUTAL WAR ON CHRISTIANS

In a column published August 22, The Daily Beast's Kirsten Powers wrote that the Muslim Brotherhood, "the group that 'renounced violence' in order gain political power," is now showing its "true colors" with its war on Coptic Christians.

In fact, Powers writes that the Muslim Brotherhood is "engaged in a full-scale campaign of terror against Egypt's Christian minority."

She cited multiple examples of the Brotherhood's activity:
The USA Today report that "40 churches have been looted and torched, while 23 others have been attacked and heavily damaged."

The way nuns were paraded through the streets "like prisoners of war" after their Franciscan school was burned down.

The fact that an orphanage was burned down and the fact that the Brotherhood's rage against Christians is so great that two security guards "on a tour boat owned by Christians were burned alive."

Her list goes on, but these are sufficient to make her point.

But could you be at risk for "Sitting Disease?"

The New Era of Surveillance is Here

Some have said it’s better to make decisions under the influence of alcohol than under the influence of fear.

But in late 2001, Americans made an entire set of decisions under the influence of fear… and created a monster.

We all remember what happened: A frightened public allowed politicians, secret agencies, and militaries to spend any amount of money and build any kind of system they wanted, to “protect us from the terrorists.”

To cash in on the new zeitgeist, new TV shows practically worshiped military and police forces; thousands of churches gave themselves over to the glorification of soldiers; and corporations scrambled for government money to build these new systems.

10 years on, it’s not just the “paranoid crackpots” anymore who can see that Orwell’s Big Brother of 1984 is terrifyingly real and more sinister than even he could have imagined.

The reality is this: Americans now live under the largest and most invasive surveillance state in the history of the world. This has been confirmed and admitted, even by the talking heads of the mainstream press.

Attorney General Eric Holder said the action marks another step in the effort to protect voting rights of all eligible Americans. He said the government will not allow a recent Supreme Court decision to be interpreted as open season for states to pursue measures that suppress voting rights.

On June 25, the Supreme Court threw out the most powerful part of the Voting Rights Act, whose enactment in 1965 marked a major turning point in black Americans’ struggle for equal rights and political power.

New Boardwalk Comfort Station Not Expected To Be Complete For Another Month

OCEAN CITY — With August heading into its final stretch and Labor Day weekend near, the new Caroline Street Performing Arts Stage and Comfort Station is still far from completion, and the contractor is now into its penalty phase for missing the deadline.

The old underground restrooms at Caroline Street and the Boardwalk were demolished last December and the construction of a new, state-of-the-art facility complete with a performing arts stage began shortly thereafter with a projected finish date in May before the arrival of the summer season. However, an wet spring slowed the construction process and it became apparent the new facility would not be completed for the start of the summer season.

When poor weather continued through much of June, further slowing the construction of the new facility, the city contracted with a private waste disposal company to provide temporary restrooms for Boardwalk visitors on a site immediately adjacent to the construction site and just behind the Fireman’s Memorial on North Division.

MEDIA MATTERS ACCIDENTALLY SPEAKS THE TRUTH, CALLING COMMON CORE ‘AN OBAMA ADMINISTRATION EDUCATION INITIATIVE’

The radical attack group Media Matters obviously didn’t get a copy of the White House Common Core talking points.

Defenders of the national education standards like to insist that the initiative was “state-led” and is therefore not a federal takeover of the public education system.

But in its attack on Fox News for airing a video clip about Common Core’s new way of doing math, Media Matters accidentally spoke the truth: The standards are “an Obama administration education initiative.”

As if that weren’t already obvious. The Obama administration dangled millions of dollars under the noses of cash-hungry states a few years ago to entice them into adopting the standards, which weren’t even developed at the time.

The president and his staff clearly worked very hard to get this initiative off the ground.

Yet Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has become increasingly defensive over questions and criticisms of the new, untested standards.

Germany Warns Windows 8 Is Dangerous – Is Microsoft A Giant Short?

I reported that Windows 8 was dangerous. Some wrote to argue I was wrong. I wrote whyNASA announced it was dumping Windows 8 and that even Skype should not be used. Microsoft has been criticized for the Prism affair. Now appears that Windows 8 is especially dangerous. The German government warns against Microsoft program because it has the ability to control the hardware and software of the computer. The NSA can enter you computer remotely. Has Microsoft created economic suicide?

http://deutsche-wirtschafts-nachrichten.de/2013/08/21/nsa-ueberwachung-bundesregierung-warnt-vor-massivem-sicherheitsrisiko-bei-windows-8/

Many laptops are now pre-installed with Windows 8 sold or delivered. The new program from Microsoft is not very successful, but is heavily promoted. Even companies that German authorities and the federal government, for example, will gradually work with this operating system. But here there are significant security vulnerabilities.

To warn IT experts before the federal program and refer to it as dangerous. There was a gap in Windows 8, which is a high security risk, reports the time with reference to documents of the Federation. This refers to the so-called Trusted Computing. A technology with about Microsoft may access the hardware and software of the computer operated with Windows 8. And thus the NSA, finally there is a very close cooperation between them ( here ).

Ready For Hillary? You Sure?

The name of the political action committee laying the groundwork for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 candidacy is instructive. It’s called Ready for Hillary, as in “we’re ready.”

We already know she’s ready. Hillary’s readiness to be president hasn’t been in doubt for about two decades. All of the stories that ponder whether she will run as some kind of mystery ignore the fact that she has been trying for the top job since before she rolled out of Little Rock. Hillary auditioned to be co-president with her husband in 1992 and first publicly flirted with a run of her own 14 years ago. Oh, she’s ready, alright.

But are Democrats? Are voters?

Ready for Hillary is not so much a super PAC as a vehicle for public contrition. It is populated by politicos like Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who backed or worked for then-Sen. Barack Obama instead of Clinton in 2008. They wanted Obama, the hopeful, shamanistic and transcendent and not Hillary, the inevitable, obligatory and prescribed.

But now, having had their fun, they’re prepared to do their duty. And having seen hope turn into frustration, perhaps a little wiser, too. So they step forward and on bended knee say that now, they are ready for Hillary. They weren’t before. But now, expectations lowered, they can take it.

“Ready for Hillary,” they say through gritted teeth, like they are about to open their credit card statements.

On The Dangers Of The NSA... From March 27, 1983

The warning signs were all there. Long, long ago they were all right there. Reading this article from the New York Times, published when I was just five years old, brings forth emotions of frustration, disappointment and even a sense of resentment. Resentment that many of those that came before us knew about all of this and basically did nothing. While those were my initial reactions, those negative emotions have turned into a strong sense of resolve and purpose. Many of us that are faced with the challenge of changing this messed up world we live in had very little to do with its creation, but that’s ok. This is our destiny and it is our duty.

There are several key takeaways from this article.
First, and most importantly, sophisticated spy technologies with little oversight will ALWAYS be abused. This is not just the case today, but it was the case in the 1950?s, 60?s and 70?s as well. As the article points out, “the N.S.A. between 1952 and 1974 developed files on approximately 75,000 Americans” and “the agency also developed files on civil-rights and antiwar activists, Congressmen and other citizens who lawfully questioned Government policies.”

Second, no institution should ever be trusted to come clean on what they are up to. The N.S.A. has a long history of lying to everyone and anyone who questions it. It is only when leaks of their unconstitutional practices are made public that they cease any surreptitious activities (or at least pretend to).

Third, the most dangerous thing we can allow is the union of “public” and “private” intelligence security functions. These inevitably merge into one giant totalitarian nightmare such as what we suffer from today.

The writing was on the wall long ago. It’s time to finally deal with this problem once and for all. Below are some choice excepts from this excellent New York Times article:

Italian Mistress

An Italian husband and his wife were having dinner at a very fine
restaurant. This absolutely stunning young woman comes over to their table, gives the husband a big kiss, says she'll see him later and walks away.

The wife glares at her husband and says, "Who was that?"

"Oh," replies the husband, "she's my mistress."

"Well, that's the last straw," says the wife. "I've had enough, I want a
divorce!"

"I can understand that," replies her husband. "But remember, if we get a divorce, it will mean no more shopping trips to Paris , no more wintering in Barbados , no more summers in Tuscany , no more Jaguar in the garage, and no more yacht club. No more credit card and large Bank accounts. But.... The decision is all yours."

Just then, a mutual friend enters the restaurant with a gorgeous babe on his arm.

"Who's that woman with Tony?" asks the wife.

"That's his mistress," says her husband.

"Ours is prettier," she replies.
